The person in my field of study that I admire
Hello again,
I remember a few years ago reading a book about influential people in the area of science, among all the stories I read, the one about a woman named Gertrude Belle Elion, a pharmacologist born in January 23, 1918 in New York, United States, caught my attention. After the death of her grandfather, she decides to become a scientist and focus on finding a cure for the disease that had caused his death. Due to her intelligence and her studies, she would manage to be hired at the Burroughs Wellcome laboratory and would begin to work with another pharmacologist named George Hitchings, with whom she would later discover a method to develop medicines in a much faster and safer way; they made differentiating normal cells from infected cells much easier, making it possible for drugs to eliminate infected cells without affecting healthy cells. This in addition to granting them a Nobel Prize in Medicine allowed him to discover treatments for various diseases such as childhood leukemia, malaria and arthritis.
My admiration for Gertrude Elion
stems from her stubbornness and intelligence, her desire to help many people,
and the important advances she made in various areas. She did not give up and
worked hard despite how difficult it was for women to find work at that time.
She was instrumental in the discovery and creation of many drugs, changing
pharmacology forever.
Thanks for reading.
